My Beauty Routine: Part II

Let me start today off by saying this– I do not generally wear makeup on my face. Occasionally, I will, but I cannot remember the last time I wore more than a lip gloss, especially since I got glasses! Sometimes I go all out and wear lip gloss AND mascara! This obviously impacts how I care for my skin, as I do not need to wash makeup off each night, and my skin is able to breath all day long.

Face:  I usually do this in the shower with a bit of baking soda. My two scoops in my cup is enough to cover my face too. Baking soda is a natural exfoliate, and because I do not leave it on my skin long, it is not drying. My skin has adapted well to this, and I have fewer breakouts than ever before. OK, I admit that is probably due to the combination of no make up and the baking soda.

Body (washing): Yet, again, the magic cup of baking soda. I pay special attention to the “odor” areas– underarms, etc– and areas where exfoliation is needed (knees, toes, etc).

Shaving: Well, this is complicated. You know I stopped shaving, right? Unbelievable, right? Well, last week I thought I would shave my underarms just because. Um, yeah. I hated it. My skin sticks to itself. I end up using more deodorant/crystal.  ACK! I will not be shaving again for a long long time. Not even for the beach or the summer.

Deodorant: Oh Deodorant…you are still a nemesis of mine! I want to ditch you completely, yet I live in Oklahoma. And I sometimes sweat and feel like I smell a bit. I do not use antiperspirants, but have been using a crystal during the fall and spring (nothing during the winter, usually). Summer is nearing though, and it was 80 degrees in Oklahoma last week, so I need to figure this out! I do not want to wear deodorant.  Because I work out, I shower more often and therefore do not feel like I smell (and no one has complained). However, on high stress work days, I do still use a bit of Tom’s of Maine or the crystal. I am considering skipping all together on days I shower, unless I have a busy day,  meeting or presentation.

All of that to say, I don’t use much, but I am STILL working on completely ditching the stuff.

Have I missed anything you are curious about? Seriously, it is not prying. I am happy to share. :)

Well I've never been much of a hair person to begin with, so I can understand the ditching of the shampoo and conditioner, but when I read this post I laughed out loud to myself! (In a good way of course). I admire you for having the confidence to shed the superficial “beauty” needs that are put on women by society. I personally would not dare leave the house with some kind of makeup on, and am a self-proclaimed product junkie. I love using all of the creams and anti-this and anti-that nonsense…and while I know it's filled with chemicals…to me it's just “hope in a jar!”
I have been working towards using more natural products but I guess all that goes out the window once I tell you that I too have found less of a need for shaving and deodorant — but that's just because I got laser hair removal on my underarms!!! ;) I can only imagine you rolling your eyes as you read this, but it was truly some of the best life changing money I've spent. I am even considering doing my legs, but it is just way too expensive.
I have made some good changes about being healthier, but I know that my beauty routine would undoubtedly scare you!

    Erica,
I doubt it would scare me, as I used to be a product junkie myself. I was
especially fond of lip glosses, eye makeup and lotions. OK, and perfumes.
Oddly enough, I do still own a few lip glosses, but have ditched the rest. I
promise, I did not roll my eyes either. ;-) I firmly believe that as long
as we are making informed decisions, it is still a choice. I simply chose
    differently than you do. :)

I have a question–what do you do about “necessary” disposables. Like toilet paper, cotton swabs and the like?

also, what is your opinion on the more eco-friendly beauty products, e.g. the aveenos, avedas, burts bees and origins (et al) of the world?
