Made It Monday

My friend, Bethany, has started doing this “Made It Monday” to show off her crafty domestic skills. I asked if I could use my “made it” dishes/foods for the week, and she said yes, so I am playing along. I hope to actually record a few of our smoothies as well! This week, however, I am going with banana cranberry (and sometimes chocolate chip) bread. This is a favorite around our house, and the tartness of the cranberries go well with the sweetness of the bread.

I am not sure if I am supposed to post the recipe or not, but if I was, I will edit later. For those of you with a Red Betty Crocker cook book, it’s the banana bread recipe with about 1/4 cup less flour, because I used whole grain organic flour, and add a cup of frozen cranberries (or so… I don’t really measure) and a cup of chocolate chips (small ones are best, but regulars will do, I use bittersweet).

Perfect Pairings: Proverbs 3: 7-9

Do not be wise in your own eyes;
fear the LORD and shun evil.

This will bring health to your body
and nourishment to your bones.

Honor the LORD with your wealth,
with the firstfruits of all your crops;

Proverbs 3: 7-9

Play along with Baloney. We have fun, I promise. :) Leave me a comment if you post a perfect pairing, so I know to come visit you!

Sharing some links… 6 March 2010

My sharing for the week… enjoy.

Train Up a Child in the Way He Should Go… — This post on Peaceful Parenting’s blog is definitely worth the read for parents, those who want to be parents, and those caring for children.  It’s a bit old, but I came upon it after reading another post in regard to a couple using No Greater Joy’s methods for raising children which resulted in the death of one child and severely injured a second.  Sadly, this is not the first time that Michael Pearl’s teachings have lead to the death of a child, and even more sadly, it probably won’t be the last.  The posts linked share numerous additional posts on the topic, including this one by a woman who knew the parents.  The post on Peaceful Parenting is in stark contrast to the abuse advocated by The Pearls and definitely more in line with how (and why) The Boy is parented in the way we do.

The Blame Game continues as a religious pamphlet blames women and girls dress for provoking rape.  Victim blaming may be becoming less frequent, but it is ingrained in society and needs to be  on everyone’s mind. Quite honestly, I think blaming the victim in rape also undermines men. Are they really that out of control that they should not be accountable for their violations?

So I am a heretic... This post has me thinking, and it probably will make you think too.  “People who look, think, and act like you are in, and everyone else is out. While I fully acknowledge the need for community and tradition and admit I have allegiances, when that box becomes a shield to defend against ever learning anything new or entering a conversation in order to grow, then I have no use for the box.”

At least once a week, Pete Wilson posts something so true and/or thought provoking I cannot help but share.  To tell the truth, I came upon his blog after Max Lucado tweeted (retweeted?)  something he had written/quoted. Yes, I stalk him on twitter now too (@pwilson) and am looking forward to the release of his book this spring. Anyway, this week he posted about a new app for iphone, but that’s not why I liked his post…it’s the conclusion that is TRUTH!

Friday Feature: Oscillococcinum

For those who know my aversion to what most people call “modern” or “western” medicine, here is an example of a product that does not fit the mold, works, and I keep in my medicine cabinet at all times. The Boy has taken it as well, and while I cannot say for certain it has cut my illness times down (how can I compare each virus in my body– once I take the oscillococcinum there is now way for me to know exactly how my body would have healed without it for that same illness), I believe it has.

Oscillococcinum has been shown in clinical studies to shorten the duration and severity of flu symptoms, and unlike many flu medicines, it is available over the counter.  Boiron produces a variety of homeopathic remedies, many of which are available worldwide, including oscillococcinum.

My personal experience is that yes it works and it works well. When I feel achy and that I am getting sick, I take Oscill and improve much more quickly than I had in the past. Just this past week, I woke up feeling horrible. I should have gotten up in the night to take it, but for some reason I didn’t. I struggled to sleep, and the morning was miserable. I ended up leaving work, going home, taking more Ocill and sleeping the day away. The next day I woke up fatigued, but overall, significantly improved.

I dislike medicine, but Oscilloccinum is a must have in our household!

And the winner of the glass dharma straws is…

When I decided to give away a set of the Glass Dharma  Straws, I was worried no one would want them.  Crazy, right? I mean, I love them, but they can be intimidating. I waited a whole year to order them myself!  I am delighted to say that the response has been one of the best since I started giving items away!

Like I said– numbers in order of comments–

  1. Ryean
  2. Erin
  3. Erin
  4. Natasha
  5. Carrie
  6. Carrie
  7. Kat
  8. Jen

And random number generator says…

Congratulations Carrie!  Send me your address, and I will have them shipped directly to you. :)

Thank you everyone for playing!
